Let’s talk vehicle adaptions – the Motability scheme

When I was applying for my Motability scheme vehicle, I had no idea of what adaptions were available to me, let alone the different types. As a young person, I have never had a vehicle fitted with adaptions before, and I couldn’t really find anyone online that I could look to for inspiration.

A note on before we get into it

It’s super important to note that you must ask for adaptions on your vehicle at the time of ordering. You cannot go back in retrospect and have them fitted. As far as I’m aware, the majority of adaptions available on the scheme are funded, meaning they shouldn’t cost you anything additional. However, it’s always best to check this with your dealership.

Driving Adaptions

These can help you to drive your vehicle if you have limited mobility or strength.

Hand controls – Allowing you to operate the accelerator and brake with your hands, rather than using your legs.

Steering aids – Such as a steering ball for better control and less strain on your arms and wrists. Note: You can have a steering ball separate to hand controls.

Left foot accelerators – Helpfiul for people who cannot use their right foot.

Pedal modifications – Designed to bring pedals closer or reposition them.

Remote control devices – Usually for indicators, horn, wipers, etc. Often combined with hand controls for a better driving experience.

Access Adaptions

These make life easier when it comes to getting in and out of your vehicle.

Swivel seats – Manually or electronically operated to help you transfer in and out.

Person hoists – To help lift you from your wheelchair into the car.

Transfer plates – A flat surface to bridge between your wheelchair and the seat.

Wheelchair storage solutions – This would include electric hoists and boot lifts.

Storage adaptions

Boot hoists – Making it possible to lift wheelchairs and scooters into the car without injury.

Roof boxes – If you need more space in your vehicle and have equipment that needs storing.

As of June 2025, there are over 50+ adaptions available through the scheme.

It’s important to note that not all adaptions are compatible with every car, so it’s best to speak with a Motability-accredited dealership before choosing a vehicle.
